Technology's Affect on Society

Day by day, America is becoming more technologically advanced resulting in a negative effect on the environment.  An article in the Washington Post states that "power consumption would drop tremendously if everyone used a tablet instead of a desktop."  If it is better for the environment, then why aren't tablets found in all business settings and schools?   It is hard to keep up with the extreme advancement in technology.  Soon, something more efficient will be made replacing tablets.  We cannot always adjust our lifestyles with the newest technological gadget.  We have to consider a number of things before jumping to the conclusion of making a new technological purchase.  The biggest thing to consider is: Is it really worth it?  Will it really make a big difference in my life?

No matter what we do to help the environment, there will always be something new that will continue  to pollute it.  It's not worth keeping up with the advancement of technology when there are simpler resources within your reach.  For example, when told to "write a paper", the first thing that comes to mind is typing it on Microsoft Word.  However, a piece of paper and pen could get the job done as well.

Technology corrupts the minds of American Society.  Looking at a new form of technology turns into a "need" for Americans rather than a "want."  Although it is necessary to complete tasks efficiently, it is also important to conserve the amount of power being used throughout the day.  According to this article, "a 27-inch desktop iMac consumes as much as 140 watts as it runs a series of processes to wake its operating system, dipping down to between 70 and 90 watts during ordinary use."  If this was compared to a tablet, the annual carbon footprint would drop to 11 pounds which results in about 95 percent savings.  In the longterm, converting to a tablet is cheaper but in reality going to the newest form of technology is not always the best option.  An easy way to save energy without switching to a tablet is not having your laptop or computer plugged into an outlet all the time, even when it is not being used.  When you are not using your laptop or when your computer is fully charged, there is no need to use an outlet.  Small things like this make a difference in conserving power without wasting money and using the latest technology.

Technology will continue to have a major impact in society but we can not let that change us.
